1000 Steps Kokoda Track Walk, Dandenong Ranges
The 1000 Steps Kokoda Track Memorial Walk in the Dandenong Ranges is one of Melbourne’s most popular walking trails and a great outdoor adventure for families with older kids.
Known for its lush greenery, steep staircase, and historical significance, this iconic hike is ideal if you are up for a bit of a challenge. We have done it a few times with our kids, here’s what you need to know.

About the1000 Steps Kokoda Memorial Walk
Also referred to simply as the 1000 Steps Walk, this challenging track was created in the early 1900s and later transformed into a memorial for Australian soldiers who fought along the real Kokoda Track in Papua New Guinea during World War II.
Along the walk, you can stop at various plaques and signs explaining the history and significance of the Kokoda campaign – making it not only a physical challenge but a meaningful learning experience too.

Walking the 1000 Steps with Kids
The walk starts at the Ferntree Gully Picnic Ground and there is plenty of signage. Initially it is a flat track which is fairly easy. It doesn’t long though because soon enough you see the steps which wind their way up through tall ferns and towering Mountain Ash trees.

The rainforest setting is cool and shady, perfect for warm days because it doesn’t get too hot. Best to go in the morning though, not only is it cooler and you work up a sweat, but the track is less busy.
The photos in this post are at around 9.30am in the morning on an Autumn day, and there were a few people on the track. We did the walk twice, and on the second trip up the track was much more busy with a lot of people on the trail.

The walk is around 3kms return. It takes around 30-45minutes to get to the top depending on your fitness levels and about half of that to get down. There are plenty of places to stop on the way to have a rest too.
Our kids loved counting the steps, although a little disappointed that there weren’t actually 1000 steps, but around 770 (ish).
While there’s no panoramic lookout at the top, there are a few nice view points along the way and you can sometimes see through the tall trees out to the Dandenong Ranges.

The journey is the main reward and reaching the top gives everyone a great sense of achievement.
The walk is relatively short, but the steady incline and numerous steps make it a decent challenge so expect a work out. Coming down can be hard on the knees too. That said, many active kids will enjoy the climb, especially if you take regular breaks and make it fun along the way.
For younger kids or those not up for a steep climb, there are easier trails nearby (more on that below).

When you do get back down to the bottom of the steps, you can grab a drink or snack at the 1000 steps Cafe. There is even a playground next to it for the kids to play if they have any energy left!
