A Christmas Carol, Melbourne
From someone who reads the Dicken’s classic every Christmas, has gone to various theatre productions and has seen every movie version over and over, A Christmas Carol at the Comedy Theatre in Melbourne is one of the most beautiful and joyful stagings of this holiday staple.
From the moment you set foot in the theatre you will be transported, pulled into merry old England by the interactive cast. The twinkling stage full of lanterns sets the mood and you know you are in for something special. Not exactly a traditional musical but classic Christmas music is interwoven in such a beautiful way.

The production notes suggest audience members be 8 and over. There are definitely some darker themes which would probably be too much for little viewers. I took my daughter last year (age 8) and she openly sobbed in one part.
We talked about it before we went this year and even though she knows the story inside and out she openly sobbed again. She said the acting was just too good. BUT the ending is so full of joy and involves the audience in such a fun and interactive way that all tears were forgotten.

The Comedy Theatre is a lovely venue and a bit smaller than a lot of the other theatres in the area so feels much more intimate and the line for the restroom during intermission is not nearly as long.
There are multiple paid parking lots nearby the theatre or Parliament Train station is a three minute walk away if you prefer public transport.
