Melbourne is a great place to be in Autumn. The weather is mild and not too cold, there are still plenty of sunny days, and the leaves are starting to change colour and drop from the trees.
The city, parks and gardens transform into a colourful landscape of Autumn colours, red, yellow and orange making it a great opportunity to take your family on a scenic drive or walk, or even a family picnic and appreciate the beauty of the changing season.

When is Autumn in Melbourne?
Autumn in Melbourne is from March until May. The season comes after summer and the weather cools down considerably. Beach days turn to picnics and walks around the parks and gardens, and we start to put our warmer clothes on.

Here are some of our favourite locations to see the gorgeous colours of the autumn leaves in Melbourne.
1. The Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne

Located in the heart of the city, one of the best places to see Autumn leaves in Melbourne is of course the Royal Botanic Gardens. With its extensive collection of deciduous trees, the gardens are a gorgeous spot for autumn photos.
Take a walk through the gardens, pack a picnic and sit on the grass. The lake is beautiful this time of year as you can see the reflection of all the Autumn colours on the lake.
If you are visiting with the kids make sure to check out the Children’s Garden, a place to explore in the nature.
2. Fitzroy Gardens

Autumn in Melbourne means a must visit to the Fitzroy Gardens. This beautiful park is home to a wide range of trees, including some stunning Japanese maples that turn a beautiful shade of red in autumn.
Make sure to take a stroll around the central lake which offers beautiful reflections of the colourful leaves.
3. Treasury Gardens, Melbourne

If you’re looking for a somewhere to see Autumn leaves in Melbourne CBD head out to the Treasury Gardens. Right in the heart of the city, this lush and picturesque park gives you the chance to relax and recharge while still not being far from the CBD.
The gorgeous colours of red, orange and yellow are prominent in the Autumn months and it makes the perfect picnic spot and photography setting.
4. Ardrie Park, Malvern
Ardrie Park in Malvern is another great spot to check out if you’re looking to see some beautiful autumn leaves in Melbourne. This beautiful park is home to a wide range of trees, some over 100 years old! These turn a beautiful shade of red in autumn.
There are plenty of spots to have a picnic and a walking path that takes you through all the stunning displays of autumn foliage. If you are visiting with the family, there is a playground for the kids too. It’s a great spot to bring the whole family and enjoy a day out in nature.
5. Williamstown Botanic Gardens

The Williamstown Botanic Gardens, just west of the city are another great spot to see some beautiful autumn leaves in Melbourne. This historic garden is located in the seaside suburb of Williamstown, just a short train or car ride from the CBD.
The gardens opened in 1860 and are one of the first public gardens in Victoria. You can find a wide range of trees, including some stunning maple and oak trees that turn beautiful shades of red, orange and yellow in autumn. There are also plenty of walking paths throughout the garden, making it a great spot for a leisurely stroll with the family. Cross the road and you are at Williamstown beach!
6. Eltham Lower Park
Eltham Lower Park is home to a variety of tree species, including some stunning deciduous trees that turn beautiful shades of red, orange and yellow in autumn. Just 20 kilometers northeast of Melbourne’s CBD it makes a great day out with the family spending time out in Autumn in Melbourne.
There are several walking trails throughout the park that take you through the displays of autumn foliage, including a walking path along the banks of the Yarra River.
7. Alfred Nicholas Gardens

If you’re happy to venture further out from the city, head to the Alfred Nicholas Memorial Gardens in Sherbrooke.
It is worth the hour drive into the Dandenong Ranges and garden is home to a stunning array of autumn colours, including some beautiful deciduous trees and a picturesque lake that reflects all the stunning colours. Perfect day out for a picnic too.
8. Mount Macedon

About an hour from Melbourne, Mount Macedon is a beautiful place to see Autumn leaves in Victoria. With stunning views of the surrounding countryside the area is known for its Autumn foliage, with gorgeous displays of yellow, orange and red colours from late April to early May.
The Memorial Cross Reserve, and the Forest Glade Gardens in particular are great spots for Autumn leaves.
9. Maroondah Reservoir Park, Healesville

Maroondah Reservoir Park, located in Healesville, is another spectacular spot to check out if you’re looking to see some stunning autumn leaves in Melbourne. The park covers over 190 hectares and is home to a wide range of tree species, many of which turn beautiful shades of red, orange and yellow in autumn.
The park has a lot of walking trails that take you around the reservoir and through the stunning displays of autumn leaves. The reflections of the autumn foliage in the water make for some truly stunning photo opportunities, great for a family photoshoot.
Make sure to also check out the Dam Wall, which offers beautiful views of the surrounding forest and hills. From here, you can take in all the beautiful colours of the autumn leaves from a different perspective.
10. TarraWarra Estate

The Yarra Valley is one of the best places to see Autumn Leaves in Melbourne and one of our favourites is the TarraWarra Estate. Located around 60kms northeast of Melbourne’s CBD the estate is surrounded by rolling hills and beautiful vineyards, making it a picturesque spot to take in all the autumn foliage. It is home to a wide range of tree species that turn beautiful shades of red, orange and yellow in autumn.
With a restaurant on site serving up delicious local produce and wines from the estate’s vineyard, it makes the perfect location for a relaxing day out.
11. Authur’s Seat State Park
Autumn in Melbourne is amazing at Arthur’s Seat State Park. Located on the Mornington Peninsula, around an hour southeast of the city, the park is home to a variety of tree species, including some stunning deciduous trees that turn beautiful shades of red, orange and yellow in autumn.
One of the best spots to take in the autumn foliage is at the Seawinds Gardens lookout, which offers panoramic views of the surrounding countryside and the colourful autumn leaves. You can get there by taking the Arthur’s Seat Eagle, the gondola which offers stunning views over the bay and lots of opportunities to see the gorgeous Autumn leaves. There are plenty of walking trails, picnic areas, and barbecue facilities too if you want to make a day of it.
