9 Fun Games to Play in the Car with Kids
Travelling with kids is not always easy but road trips have never been more fun with these fun car games for kids.
Whether you are heading on a day trip or weekend getaway, make the car ride easier with some fun games to play in the car for the whole family.
1. I spy
One of the easiest and most popular games to play in the car for kids is “I Spy”. You don’t need anything but your eyes.
The first person starts with “I spy with my little eye, something beginning with… (Letter)”. They choose a letter and everyone else needs to guess what it is. Whoever guesses correctly can be the spy.
2. Alphabet race
Another fun spying game to play in the car, the Alphabet race is a competition between members of the family.
Everyone has to write down the alphabet on a piece of paper and then try to find at least one thing starting with that letter. First person to finish the alphabet is the winner.
3. I’m going on a picnic
This is a really fun car game for kids and adults where you need to use your memory.
The game starts with one person saying “I’m going on a picnic and I’m bringing (ITEM)” and chooses something they would like to bring. It could be a piece of food, a rug, a game or whatever.
The second person then repeats what the first person said, and adds another item.
The next person repeats the first item, the second item, and adds a third. The game keeps going until someone can’t remember all of the items said. It can sometimes reach 10-20 items or more depending on your memory.
4. Who am I?
A fun car game for kids that really gets the brain working. One person thinks of someone, it could be a person, or an animal. The other players need to ask different questions so they can work out what it is.
Example questions could be: “Are you famous?”, “Are you an animal”, “Do you walk upright?”, “Do you have blonde hair”, etc. The player who guesses correctly is the winner and it is their turn to think of someone.
5. Car colours game
This one takes a bit of concentration but is a fun game to play in the car for kids. On a piece of paper, you draw columns with colours at the top. As you drive along the kids mark colours as they pass cars of that colour.
This works best with colours that are harder to find such as pink, purple, yellow, gold etc. Using black, white or blue still works but they will be ticking off too fast.
6. Don’t Say It
This one is quite a competitive car game for kids. Before you leave on your road trip, choose up to 5 words that will be banned from saying on your road trip.
During the journey if a person says one of those words, they get a strike. The person with the least strikes at the end of the road trip is the winner.
7. Story time
Storytime is a fun game to play in the car for all ages. One person starts to tell a story, but stops after the first sentence. The second player will continue the story with another sentence. The third player will continue with a third sentence, and so on.
You go round and round adding sentences until you finish the story. Kids can let their imagination run wild and the stories can get very creative.
8. Singalong
This car game is really fun for the whole family. One person chooses a song and starts to say or sing the lyrics while the others try to guess.
Singing the lyrics is easier and probably better for younger kids, but for older kids and adults, you can say the lyrics without singing, it makes the game more difficult.
