1. St Kilda Dog Beach St kilda
One of the closest dog beaches in Melbourne to the CBD is St Kilda dog beach between Brooks Jetty and the north end of the car park. It is a great off lead area where your four legged friends can burn off some energy and take a dip.
For those looking to combine a beach day with the vibrant atmosphere of St. Kilda, St. Kilda West Beach offers the perfect blend. The beach itself isn’t as popular as the main tourist beach at St Kilda because of it’s limited amenities, but it is just as nice, and perfect for a day out with your pooch.
2. Altona Dog Beach – Altona

A very popular off lead dog beach in Melbourne’s west. The beach is very shallow so even when the tide is in the dogs have plenty of room to romp and splash without worrying about their feet touching the bottom.
When the tide is out there is even a little boat wreck to explore. Altona beach is located next to the Altona Sports Club there is ample parking and water taps to wash off sand right by the car park. Also it’s worth noting there is a beautiful view of the city.
3. Sandown Street Dog Beach- Brighton

This Melbourne dog beach is a great one for those in Bayside. Right between Elwood Beach and the Brighton Bathes sits this fabulous little stretch of sand for your dog to have a splash.
This area is sheltered by the marina so hardly any waves come in and lots of shallow spots for less confident dogs. This is a very popular spot so can get quite busy.
4. Sandridge Dog beach Port Melbourne
A lovely Melbourne dog beach close to the city with lots of picnic and BBQ areas and a gorgeous view of the Melbourne skyline.
While most of the area is fine to have your dog off lead, make sure to look out for signs with instructions for when to use a leash.
6. Ricketts Point – Beaumaris

Ricketts Point is a beautiful stretch of beach with loads of rock pool for the kids to explore. It is off lead dog beach in Melbourne’s south east but there are rules about keeping dogs off the rock formations so that can be a bit tricky when the pups want to explore too.
That being said there’s still loads of room to run and if you are up for a nice walk there is a path through the scrub that leads to the Mentone Dog Beach (about 2.7kms) so you could hit up two dog beaches in one day.
7. Mentone Dog Beach – Mentone
One of the most popular dog friendly beaches in Melbourne is the Mentone dog beach which is a beautiful spot for your pooch to have a run around. There is a lifesaving club on the beach and plenty of facilities including toilets, water tapts, BBQ’s and grassed areas.
The western part of the beach is an off lead zone, but look out for signage for other parts as there are certain rules and restrictions.
8. Royal Beach – Mornington
A short walk from the main centre of Mornington is this small but lovely off lead beach in Melbourne south west.
Lots of rocks and pebbles to smell and even a small grassland for the dogs to explore. The stairs down to the beach are a bit steep so be careful. Great place to stop with your pooch if you are on or visiting the Mornington Peninsula.
