These school holidays at Scienceworks you can discover the science behind the fastest traveller in the universe – light – at the new exhibition Illuminate: How Science Comes to Light. This new exhibition ignites the senses and lets you learn through hands-on interactive play. What is light, what can we do with it and how do we see?
Developed in-house by Museums Victoria, Illuminate explores visual perception and illumination through colour, sound and action. Learn how light behaves, where it comes from, how it reflects and refracts and what tools we’ve invented to understand it.

Family Theatre Shows

These Summer holidays in Melbourne there is a range of theatre shows and musicals suitable for all ages. Alice in Wonderland is playing at the beautiful Ripponlea Estate, Wind in the Willows is playing at the Botanical Gardens. Tinkerbell and the Dream Fairies is playing at the Athenaeum Theatre. There is also the Madagascar Musical and the Alice in Wonderland Live Stage show! Lots of fun to be had with these interactive shows.

Blue Lotus Water Garden

These school holidays in Melbourne you can walk into a colourful new world of lotus and waterlilies at the Blue Lotus Water Garden. This 14 acre garden features a paradise of Giants of the Amazon to ancient Japanese flowers and is open to the public this Summer.

Mordialloc Summer Carnival

Back again for 2023, the summer carnival is one of the best school holiday activities in Melbourne. With rides, games, food and showbags, it is a spectacular summer event you won’t want to miss.
New this year there will be the Straya Mania Mini Golf Course at the carnival as well. Putt you golf ball through sharks, prawns on the BBQ, koalas, emus and crocodiles – super fun for the whole family!

One of the best school holiday activities in Melbourne is heading to one of the various museums for the day!
Melbourne Museum has an awesome expo Bricktionary at the moment which is well worth a visit!
For those who love science, make sure to check out Scienceworks and the planetarium. Artvo is great to introduce your kids to art with a 3D interactive gallery. Pollywoodside in the city centre is perfect for a family day out aboard a tall ship.
Try one or try them all, there are lots of different activities going on at eat venue during the holiday period.

Melbourne Farms

Get kids up to nature and visit and experience what real farm life is about. Melbourne has some fantastic farm experiences all over Melbourne including Myuna Farm in Melbourne’s south east, Chesterfield Farm in the east, Bundoora Farm in the north and Collingwood Children’s Farm near the CBD.

Sk8House in Melbourne’s south east is great for roller skating or roller blading, or if you want to try your skills on ice, check out the O’brien Skate House at the Docklands or Ice HQ is another great one in Melbourne’s north.
Melbourne Theme Parks
Looking for an adventure filled day out? You can find some of Melbourne’s favourite school holiday activities at a range of fun theme parks and water parks!

Luna Park and has been an iconic city attraction for more than a hundred years and is only 10 minutes from the city. Fun and easy day out if you don’t want to travel too far.
Funfields in the northern suburbs will provide a fantastic day out for the whole family jampacked with rides and water slides.
Gumbuya World in Melbourne’s outer east is a water park, wildlife park and theme park all in one. There is lots of fun all year round and they usually have some fun school holiday activities going on too.
