Ballooning in the Yarra Valley with Global Ballooning Australia
We have explored some of the best in Melbourne and around Victoria but one of the most magical things we have done is the hot air balloon flight over the Yarra Valley.
The hot air balloon ride is exciting and exhilarating from start to finish whether you are looking for something romantic to do with your partner, or just something special to do with friends or family.
It’s an early start because you need to be there a couple of hours before sunrise to get the best experience, but it is totally worth it.

Global Ballooning Review – Yarra Valley

Because ballooning is a weather dependant activity, the confirmation comes late in the afternoon the day before your flight is booked to make sure it is safe to fly.
Once you get your confirmation it means your flight is set to go and you can plan your arrival.
Depending on the period you plan to go ballooning, sunrise can be at different times. Generally though you will need to be on site between 4.30-6.30am.
Our flight was start of February and our meeting time was 5.15 at the Balgownie Estate. It was still dark when we arrived.
From there transfers take you to the launch site where your balloon is waiting and the pilot and crew greet you and your fellow passengers.
Setting up the Hot Air Balloon

You can actually help the crew set up the balloon and watch the flight preparations. The balloon is laid out on the ground and it is slowly inflated with huge fans and then the burner is ignited to fill the balloon with hot air.
Take off

Once the balloon is fully inflated it will stand up and the basket will stand in place where passengers can get in. There is usually no door so you need to climb over.
Most of the baskets can fit about 16 people plus the pilot. Once everyone is in the basket you will have your safety brief and then the pilot fires up the burner and you will slowly lift off.

The Hot Air Balloon Flight
The hot air balloon flight itself is quite relaxing, in fact unless you look down it doesn’t feel like you are moving at all as it is all slow and calm. It is also mostly quiet except for when the pilot turns on the burner.

The direction that you will move depends on which way the wind is blowing. Hot air balloons can’t turn left and right to steer, they can only move up and down so the pilot will drive the balloon with the wind.
Landing the hot air balloon

The pilots have an idea of a few sites they can land the balloon when the time comes, but nothing is certain until nearing the end of the flight. This is because it depends on the wind direction so they can’t be sure until last minute.
There is a support vehicle on the ground who is tracking the balloon and meets at the landing site.
There is the decent, and then the basket will touch the ground and slowly drag for a little. It feels like it may tip but eventually tilts back again until it stops.

You stay in the balloon until it cools down and then everyone gets out and helps to deflate the balloon.
The kids loved this bit, some people have to lay on and roll up the balloon, while others have to hold the opening so the air could come out.
Breakfast at the Balgownie Estate
The breakfast is optional but totally worth it. As you are up so early, by the time the flight is finished everyone is starving!

Back at the meeting spot at the Balgownie Estate, a reserved table and buffet breakfast is waiting. Champaign on arrival for adults is served, and you can line up to enjoy the spread.
On offer is bacon and eggs (of all types, poached, scrambled, boiled) with mushrooms, tomatoes and beans etc. Cold meats and cheeses, along with a range of delicious pastries and fresh fruit. To drink there is of course coffee, tea, smoothies, and hot chocolate.
Tips for your balloon flight
- The weather in the air is the same as on the ground so wear what you would normally, no extra layers needed.
- The basket is divided into 4 sections with up to 4 people in each. It is a tight space but comfortable enough.
- Bring a spare pair of socks and shoes in case your feet get wet or dirty, depending on where you land the ground can be muddy.
- Don’t forget your camera! The crew have a go pro for some group photos in the air, but if you want extra memories bring your own (just make sure it can be safely secured around your wrist or be very careful with your phone!)
- The breakfast is totally worth it and a great way to finish off your unforgettable morning!
