Snow Fun at Lake Mountain

Lake Mountain is a cross country family friendly ski resort perfect for first time snow-goers and those with young kids.

Being just 2 hours from Melbourne near the Yarra Valley you don’t have to pack up your kids for a whole week, it is possible to do a day trip from Melbourne if you get up early.

It really is super easy to get there, just make sure to check the weather and the website advice, as you may need chains for your car. We usually rent them in Marysville as there are a few places in town.

For families who do want to stay longer, you can also find different types of family friendly accommodation in Marysville too. It is about a half our drive up the mountain from there.

Lake Mountain Alpine Resort is the perfect way to introduce your little ones to the snow. Even if you have babies and toddlers, it makes a great day out. Kids of all ages can enjoy what Lake Mountain has to offer.

They are lots of fun for all ages with the toboggan runs and a separate snow play areas to make a snowman or have a snow fight. There are no big lifts, so it isn’t a huge ski resort like Mount Buller. This is the advantage as it makes it super easy to navigate for families.

Toboggan Park Tickets

Lake Mountain will offer toboggan access for a fee ($33 per adult, $11 for under 5s). This includes the use of a resort-provided toboggan and magic carpet. The two toboggan runs will be maintained with man-made snow throughout the season if the natural snow is not the best.

There is also a free toboggan run (Leadbeater’s Toboggan Run) when there is sufficient natural snow, but it requires using your own toboggan.

Make sure to book everything online so you are prepared. The snow season can get super busy!

Snow Gear

If you don’t have any snow gear, no problem. Lake Mountain Alpine Resort have a click and collect on their website where you can hire jackets, boots, shoes, and even toboggans, skis or snowboards for adults and children. Or you can just hire once you arrive.

There are also a few places in Marysville at the bottom of the mountain where you can hire gear too, and also chains if needed for your car.

Food

When you get peckish, there is a cafe restaurant onsite serving hot food and drinks. But if you don’t want to buy lunch on site, you can also bring your own. Little ones tend to get quite hungry during the day so best to at least bring some snacks anyway!

Skiing and Snowboarding Lessons for Kids

Unfortunately the ski and snowboard lessons at Lake Mountain Ski Resort aren’t available this year. The lessons in the past were perfect for kids from 5 years old and our two boys absolutely loved it.

Tips for visiting Lake Mountain in Winter

If you don’t have the gear, hire it in advance to make sure you get what you want.
Make sure to check the weather before you go to see if you need car chains. You can hire these in Marysville before you head up the mountain.
Prepay your entry for convenience
Arrive early so you can get a close car park, this way the kids don’t have to walk to far.
Toboggan ticket must be prepaid, kids under 5 free with accompanied adult.
Bring spare clothes for the kids, especially socks and gloves which tend to get soggy.
