National Wool Museum, Geelong
The National Wool Museum has been a famous part of Geelong’s history since it was founded in 1988. It is one of the most popular Geelong attractions for any age and makes a great day trip from Melbourne.
The museum is made up of a variety of modern exhibitions, educational activities, and special events to convey the narrative of wool, fibre, and textiles in Australia.

This renowned establishment provides a variety of information about the individuals involved in every facet of the wool business from colonisation.

With over three different levels, the National Wool Museum has something for every different age group.

The first floor showcases what life was like as a shearer in the past and present times.
Kids can try their luck at using a stencil to write their name similar to how they do it on the wool bale. This level also includes a brief timeline of Djilong (Djilong means ‘tongue of land’ and is the Wadawarrung name for Geelong.

It shows tools that are used with shearing, as well as a real-life set-up of a shearing shed.
My daughter loved the 3D shearing shed model that looked like a giant doll house.

The second floor includes the Reminiscence Cottage. The Reminiscence Rustic is a multi-award-winning initiative that allows people with dementia and those who provide care for them to explore the world of the past in a hands-on cottage setting.
Kids will enjoy walking through this cottage as will adults who might find some resemblance to their old homes!

The third and final floor is where all the fun for the kids is. There is a large area to the right of this floor that is dedicated to the Lego building.

A large table and stools are available for your children to get lost in their imaginations. A creative room is adjacent to the lego room. Here, kids will find all types of recycled materials to create their masterpieces.

There is glue, scissors, pom poms, buttons, ribbons, jewels, feathers you name it- it’s there! With all these fun art and craft materials kids can design and create a “creature” to add to the wetland setting.
For younger kids, there are also soft toys, colouring and books to play with.
The National Wool Museum is a great interactive experience for all.
