Where is Phillip Island?
Phillip Island is on the south eastern coast of Victoria, Australia, about a 2hr drive from Melbourne. This popular weekend getaway for families can also be done in a day trip from Melbourne if you leave early enough.
Most visitors choose to stay in the main town of Cowes, which is on the beach, quite central, and within a short drive to most attractions. San Remo is another popular spot.

1. Penguin Parade
By far the most popular attraction in Phillip Island when visiting Phillip Island with kids is the Penguin Parade. Every evening at sunset, penguins rush to the shores of the Island after a day of fishing.
From the boardwalks and viewing stands near the shore visitors can watch the penguins waddling up to the shore to the safety of their homes.
Book your tickets early to avoid disappointment, as they book out in advance especially in the Summer months.
The penguin parade really is a once in a lifetime experience and cannot be missed if you are visiting Phillip Island, especially with kids.

2. Koala Conservation Centre

If you are looking to get up close to one of Australia’s most iconic animals, the Koala Conservation Park gives you an incredible experience. Walking on the boardwalks you can watch the koalas up close in their natural habitat.
The Koala Conservation centre is not a zoo, rather it is a really unique experience giving visitors the opportunity to see koalas act as they do in the wild.
Kids as well as parents will really be amazed when coming face to face with these unique animals. It was one of our favourite things to do in Phillip Island with kids.
3. A Maze ‘n Things

Illusions, magic, scientific games, and a huge maze! A Maze ‘n Things is the perfect place to stimulate your child’s brain and adults will love it too.
This unique interactive attraction is perfect for a morning or afternoon out in Phillip island with the kids. You can find a range of different spaces including Magic Mannor, Puzzle Island, Mini Golf, and the Sky Trail which will entertain the whole family.
If you get a rainy day, or you just need a break from the beach, it is a great day out and a fun thing to do in Phillip island with kids.

7. Churchill Island Heritage Farm
Another popular thing to do in Phillip Island with kids is to visit Churchill Island. Experience some of Australian history at a historical working farm where you can get a glimpse into the lives of the early Australian settlers.
This tiny island of just 57 hectares is just off the coast of Phillip Island and accessible by boat. Enjoy a walk through the wetlands and heritage gardens, and enjoy the unspoiled views of the stunning coast.
8. A Scenic Ride in a Helicopter

To really experience the beauty of Phillip Island why not see it from a different perspective. One of the most amazing things to do in Phillip Island is a helicopter ride!
Phillip Island offer helicopter rides around the island offering spectacular views from above. These scenic flights are a little pricey with 15 minute rides starting around $150 per person depending on the company you go with. Children need to be at least 3 years old for most flights.
If you have the budget for it, a scenic flight is worth the trip and definitely one of the most memorable things to do in Phillip Island with kids or not!

Once you have seen the main sites and attractions, a beach day (or two) is definitely recommended. Phillip Island has some stunning beaches and the beach in Cowes is perfect for a relaxing day out.

When to visit Phillip Island
You can visit Phillip Island all year round and most of the main attractions are accessible. If you are heading to the island for the beaches however, then during the Summer and shoulder seasons are most recommended.
Peak periods are school holidays, over Christmas and the new year and other public holidays where prices for accommodation are at their highest. If you visit during the week or outside of these times you can get some reasonably priced accommodation.

If you want somewhere central, then the main town, Cowes is definitely the spot to stay in Phillip Island. Cowes is lively and full of cafes and restaurants and is right on the beach.
