If you have ever wanted to experience a white Christmas, you don’t have to fly off to the northern hemisphere to have one, because Christmas is coming this July to Sovereign Hill in Ballarat with the Winter Wonderlights!

One of the most popular annual winter events for families in Melbourne is the Winter Wonderlights at Sovereign Hill. It is one of our favourites and we try to go every year. Even as the kids are growing up it is still a great event for all ages.

Thousands of visitors of all ages each year brave the cold at Sovereign Hill to experience this sensational event, it really does get better each year.

With the Winter lights glowing, the faux snow falling and appearances from Saint Nicholas, it is such a great day and night out for the whole family.

Sovereign Hill is one of Victoria’s most iconic attraction and makes a fantastic day trip from Melbourne for the whole family. It is also one of the most popular things to do in Ballarat.

Just 90 minutes from the city, you can step back in time at Sovereign Hill to Ballarat’s after the discovery of gold in 1851, when thousands of international adventurers rushed to the Australian goldfields in hope of striking it lucky and finding their fortune.

Open from 10am, Sovereign Hill will amaze from the moment you enter. Costumed staff will meet and greet you at the entrance, and pose for photos. You can discover recreated buildings which are filled with all different antiques and machinery that would exist back in the “olden days”.

You can go old style bowling, or try your skills at candle making, take a coach ride around town, and of course taste some of the popular raspberry drops that Sovereign Hill is famous for. Don’t forget to take a turn at panning for gold in case you get lucky!

Winter Wonderlights Santa and Mrs Clause

Take a family walk down the main street filled with fairy lights and candles where you can experience the European Christmas markets. Head to St Nicholas’s Grotto and snap a photo with St Nick inside his traditional winter hut to celebrate Christmas in July.

Breathe in the fresh air and sweet smells of the traditional sweets and warm yourself with a glass of mulled wine.

New for 2026 at the Winter Wonderlights

In 2026, Winter Wonderlights has introduced flexible ticket versions to ensure everyone can find their perfect winter moment:

Day Ticket (10am–7pm): The complete experience. Enjoy a full day entry to the museum and stay as the sun sets to see the Sovereign Hill transform into a wintry wonderland. Available daily.
Evening Ticket (5pm–7pm): Perfect for families wanting to experience the full magic of Winter Wonderlights after dark. Available Saturday evenings throughout the season.
Night Ticket (8pm–10pm): Designed for the late-night owls and adventure seekers. Experience the projections and the wintry atmosphere in an exclusive late-night session. Available Fridays and Saturdays (except opening night).

2026 Highlights

Shining streetscapes: Watch as iconic buildings are bathed in a vibrant kaleidoscope of colour and music, featuring world-class light projections.
Main Street snowfall: Feel the chill and the thrill as Main Street receives daily dustings of enchanting white faux snow.
Diggings after dark: Experience the goldfields by firelight. A hauntingly beautiful soundscape recreates a night on the diggings, featuring police raids, sing-a-longs, and the glow of the Chinese Village.
Wintry treats and live theatre: Warm up with hearty seasonal food and cosy drinks while enjoying live comedy and pantomimes at the Victoria Theatre.
St. Nicholas’ winter hut: Visit St. Nick in his cozy Sovereign Hill home to share your wishlist and snap a keepsake photo.
Hands-on creativity: A pop-up arts and craft studio invites guests to assemble and paint traditional wooden treasures to take home.

With a dazzling light show, full theatre program, hands-on kids’ activities and more, Sovereign Hill delivers a Christmas in July like no other. It really is spectacular.

Make sure to head to the main strip to get a good spot because it can get quite crowded. When the lights are on the music plays and the snow falls creating such a magical atmosphere. The kids really love it!

Tips for Visiting the Winter Wonderlights

Rug up, it is sure to be cold especially at night
Make sure the kids are wearing gumboots, some parts are muddy and if panning for gold they will most likely get their feet wet.
Parking is free onsite.
Plan out your day, there are so many activities to do, you won’t want to miss out.
Winter Wonderlights spectacular startswhen the sun goes down, around 5.30pm, make sure to be in the main street a bit before to get a good spot.
Book in advance if you would like dinner at a restaurant, it can be difficult getting a spot at night.
