Studley Park Boathouse & Restaurant, Kew
Tucked away along the Yarra River, Studley Park Boathouse is one of those rare Melbourne spots that genuinely feels like an escape, even though you’re still right near the city.
We absolutely love this place! With riverside dining, leafy surrounds, a playground for the kids, and boat hire on the water, it’s a beautiful option for families looking for something a little different without leaving Melbourne.

A Riverside Escape That Feels Miles From Melbourne
It’s hard to believe how close you are to the CBD. Surrounded by trees and water, Studley Park Boathouse feels calm, quiet and almost countryside-like. We visited as a family with our two kids, stayed for dinner and hired a paddle boat, such a great evening!
It’s easy to turn a visit here into a relaxed half-day adventure. Arrive via one of the Yarra River walking and cycling trails, enjoy some time on the water, then settle in for a long lunch or dinner overlooking the river.
Studley Park Boathouse Restaurant

We had dinner at the restaurant on a Friday night. The riverside setting is stunning, sitting right by the water with river views, it feels peaceful and a world away from city life, especially in the evening.
The menu focuses on modern Australian dishes and works well for families. Think wood fired pizzas, fish and meat options, salads, and share platters.
Happy hour was between 5-7 too and there was some music playing so the vibe was great, there were lots of people having a few drinks on the water.
There’s enough variety for adults, while still being approachable for kids, making it an easy choice if you’re dining as a family. Also, there is a fenced playground onsite so plenty of room for the kids to run around too.

Boat Hire on the Yarra River
Boat hire is one of the biggest drawcards here, especially if you’re visiting with kids. You can choose from:
- Paddle boats
- Kayaks
- Canoes
We hired a paddle boat, and the kids absolutely loved it. They took turns pedalling while we enjoyed the scenery and slowed the pace right down. The stretch of river here is calm and scenic, making it an easy and enjoyable experience even if you’ve never hired a boat before.
It’s a fun, low-stress outdoor activity and a great addition to a visit, especially if you’re looking for outdoor activities in Melbourne that kids actually enjoy.
