You Yangs Regional Park – Walks, Bike Trails & Family Adventures
The You Yangs Regional Park is a great spot for an active day out with plenty of walking tracks, bike trails, and picnic spots. Located just under an hour from the city, between Melbourne and Geelong, the You Yangs is one of our favourite spots for a nature escape with the kids or even without.

You Yangs Regional Park with Kids
It’s a nature escape that you can keep coming back to over and over again and discover something new every time. I can remember coming here as a child, now I am bringing my own kids here.
This stunning park is known for its rugged granite peaks, native bushland, wildlife (we have spotted wallabies and kookaburras and more), and panoramic views across the plains.
There are plenty of well-maintained walking trails, mountain biking paths, and lots of picnic areas to set up for the day, relax and enjoy lunch outdoors with free gas BBQ to use to cook too.
You Yangs Walks and Hikes
There are plenty of walks to do for all ages and we have done a quite a few of them over the years, pre kids and now with kids. Here’s some of the most popular You Yangs walking trails.
Flinders Peak Walk
If you’re up for a bit of a challenge with a big reward, the Flinders Peak Walk is a must-do at the You Yangs. This is the most iconic trail in the park and our kids favourite! It’s a steady climb with over 450 steps leading to the top of Flinders Peak, the highest point in the You Yangs.

The trail starts at the Turntable Carpark and follows a well-maintained gravel path and stone steps to the summit. You need to climb over 450 steps, so it’s definitely a workout, but it’s manageable and there are plenty of places to stop on the way if you have younger kids. (just make sure to bring some snacks as a reward!)
Along the way, you’ll walk through classic Aussie bushland with towering eucalypts, granite boulders, and plenty of opportunities to spot wildlife especially wallabies and kookaburras. There are several rest spots along the trail as well.

The view from the summit is absolutely worth the effort and on a clear day, you can see the Melbourne skyline, Geelong, and even across Port Phillip Bay.
There is a raised viewing platform with signage pointing out landmarks in every direction. It’s the perfect place to catch your breath, take some photos, and soak in the scenery. Just be cautious with younger kids near the edges, as there are some steep drop-offs beyond the viewing areas.

Flinders Peak is best suited for school-aged kids and up, or younger ones if they’re used to walking. It’s a fantastic hike for families looking to challenge themselves a little and be rewarded with unforgettable views.
Start point: Turntable Carpark
Distance: 3.2km return (1hr)
Tip: Bring plenty of water and wear good walking shoes.
East-West Walk
I love this track, it’s a good one to get the heart pumping. The East-West Walk is one of the most scenic and underrated trails in the You Yangs and it’s a family favourite for us when we want a slightly longer hike without the steep climb of Flinders Peak.
This scenic 4.5km loop winds through rocky outcrops and eucalypt forest. It has a bit of everything, views, bushland, and a few spots where you need to walk through small obstacles.

It’s a good one if you want something a bit longer without too much climbing as it goes up and down. You will often see people training here.
Starting from the Turntable Carpark, the trail loops around the western side of Flinders Peak and connects back around to the east. It’s moderately challenging, with a few short inclines and uneven surfaces, but there’s no major climbing involved.
Older kids who enjoy walking and exploring will love it, while younger ones might need a few breaks along the way.

What we love about this trail is the sense of peace and space, it tends to be quieter than the Flinders Peak trail, and parts of the track feel like you’re deep in the bush.
Along the way, you’ll walk past massive granite boulders and get peeks of the surrounding plains through the trees.

Start point: Turntable Carpark
Distance: 4.5kms Moderate to Hard (1.5-2hrs)
Tip: Walk it clockwise for a more gradual ascent.
Big Rock Walk
If you’re after something easier but still rewarding, the Big Rock Walk is perfect. It’s a gentle trail leading to a huge granite outcrop with sweeping views.
You can start at the Turntable Carpark for the walk which takes around an hour. Kids love climbing around on the rock (safely, of course!), and it’s a great picnic spot.
If you want to see the Big Rock, but aren’t keen on the walk, you can actually drive right up to the Big Rock Carpark and it’s a short 5 min walk.
Start point: Turntable Carpark or Big Rock Carpark
Distance: 3kms return – Easy (1hr)
Tip: Sunset views from Big Rock are gorgeous!
Park Facilities

One of the reasons we love the You Yangs so much is how family-friendly it is. There are 9 different picnic areas, many of them with toilets and picnic tables. The main picnic areas at Turntable Carpark and Big Rock also have gas barbecues you can use.
It makes it really easy to spend the whole day there, hike in the morning, picnic lunch, and maybe another shorter trail after. Even if you don’t walk or hike, it still makes a great day out for a family picnic in the nature.
There’s also a fantastic mountain biking area, and while we haven’t explored that side too much yet, we’ve seen families enjoying the beginner-level tracks.
The You Yangs Regional Park is one of those places you can return to over and over again and still discover something new. Whether you’re chasing views, letting the kids burn off energy, or simply want a peaceful bushwalk and picnic, the park delivers every time.
