Central Deborah Gold Mine Bendigo
Looking for one of the best things to do in Bendigo with kids? Central Deborah Gold Mine is a must-do for families wanting a fun and memorable experience while also learning more about Bendigo’s gold rush history.
We visited during our Bendigo trip with our two kids aged 11 and 13, and going underground to see the mines was the absolute highlight of our trip for them.

Central Deborah Gold Mine, Bendigo Review
Central Deborah Gold Mine is one of Bendigo’s most well-known attractions. It operated from 1939 to 1954, extracting 929 kilograms of gold worth tens of millions of dollars today!
At its peak, the mine reached a depth of 412 metres, with 17 levels and 15 kilometres of underground tunnels.
Before the underground tour even begins, there is plenty to explore around the site. The above-ground exhibits help bring Bendigo’s gold mining history to life, with mining equipment, displays and information that give you more context before heading down into the mine.
There is also gold panning outside too, which is a fun extra for kids and a nice way to make the visit feel even more hands-on.

What to expect on the tour
The guided tour shares the history of Bendigo’s gold mining industry in a way that is easy to follow and interesting for both kids and adults.
You get a close-up look at the underground mine, learn more about the tools and techniques miners used, and hear stories that help bring the experience to life. It was immersive, interesting and very different from a regular museum visit.

One of the things our kids really enjoyed was getting involved in some of the demonstrations during the tour. They had the chance to help hammer the steel into the wall like the miners did, and the guide also showed us how the drill worked. That hands-on element made the experience even more engaging for the kids especially.
Our whole family enjoyed it, and it was great to see such a mix of ages on the tour too. There were younger kids, older children, adults and older visitors. It is educational, but also engaging enough to keep kids interested throughout.

Is Central Deborah Gold Mine good for kids?
Yes, Central Deborah Gold Mine is a great Bendigo attraction for families. Our kids were 11 and 13 and were the perfect age to enjoy the history and the underground experience, but there were also younger children on the tour as well.
Because it is a guided experience, it is easy for families to relax and enjoy it without needing to lead the way themselves. If you are visiting Bendigo with kids and want an activity that combines local history with something a little more hands-on, this is a great choice.
