Top Things to do in Kinglake
Most people who hear about Kinglake naturally ask if there is a lake. One would assume there would be a lake with that name right? But one thing to know about Kinglake is that there is no lake.
While there aren’t loads of tourist attractions, Kinglake is all about nature, adventure, and country charm. We have been to Kinglake a few times, for day trips and even spend Easter weekend here one year too, it’s a gorgeous spot for a weekend away. Whether you’re visiting with kids, friends, or as a couple, you’ll find plenty of ways to enjoy this beautiful part of Victoria.
We have also included our top pics for where to eat in Kinglake, and even our recommendation for accommodation too.
1. Kinglake National Park
The Kinglake National Park is home to a variety of native birds and wildlife. It is a great spot for a scenic walk or bike ride, and has some great camping spots for those who want to stay out overnight.
Bushfires in 2009 devastated much of the park, but the regrowth has been incredible, and today it’s one of the most peaceful places to reconnect with nature.
2. Mason Falls

Within the Kinglake National Park one of the main attractions is Mason Falls and the beautiful picnic area which is a large shaded area with barbecues and tables.
From the picnic ground, it’s a 700m walk to the Mason Falls lookout through the forest. The waterfall is spectacular after rain, though drier in summer.
For families with little ones, the Lyrebird Circuit Walk (500m) is easy and pram-friendly. If you’re up for more of a challenge, the Running Creek Track is almost 8km and offers a fantastic immersion in the bush.
3. Bollygum Park

Right in the heart of Kinglake you can find Bollygum Park and Playground which is actually based on a children’s book “Bollygum”. It is a great place to take the kids for a morning or afternoon and have a picnic.
The park features a huge themed playground and skate park which our kids absolutely loved. We brought their skateboards along and spend a few good hours there. There is a shaded picnic area with BBQs. There are often markets or community events nearby, making it a fun place to spend a few hours.
4. Kinglake Forest Adventures

One of the best things to do in Kinglake with kids is the Kinglake Forest Adventures which provides a day full of adventure for all ages. Climb the treetops, swing along the zipline, or even head out for a mountain bike ride.
They closed in 2020 but have reopened for private group bookings, so check their website for current availability.
5. Bowden Spur Mountain Bike Area
For those who love to ride, make sure to check out the Bowden Spur Mountain Bike area where you can have an action packed day of mountain bike riding. There are plenty of trails, tracks, and jumps to get your heart pumping.

Pick up fresh fruit and vegetables, baked goods, local honey, preserves, meats, and coffee. It’s also a lovely way to experience the friendly community vibe.

This is another great picnic spot in Kinglake National Park. With open grassy areas, picnic tables, and short walking tracks, it’s especially good for younger families looking for an easy day out..

While Kinglake itself is all about nature, you’re only a short drive from the Yarra Valley. A visit to a winery or brewery makes a great add-on for parents. Places like De Bortoli, Yering Station, and Watts River Brewing are within 30–40 minutes. Some wineries are family-friendly with open lawns for kids to play.
